This song is from the perspective of an astronaut, singing to his child as a comforting lullaby. He's out on a mission in space and will not be home for a very long time. He feels called by the mission, by space, by the adventure, but he still loves his child with all his heart, and leaves this song to keep them company on the many lonely nights.
Stars (Scared to be born) is also about the journey that is life, and being both terrified and excited about what's to come. I think the feeling is best encapsulated in the bridge, with the lyrics; "I'm not afraid of dying, I'm just scared that I won't have lived."

Look out your window, and in the darkness among the stars you're being watched over. Don't be afraid of life, of living. You're alive now, so live! Give it your all, and while you do, your loved ones, dead or alive, will watch over you. But don't limit yourself because of fear. After all, do you think that the stars are scared to be born?
